Nigerian Most Visited Web Startups on Alexa Top 100 Sites

Today, I thought I should write a quick review about the most visited Nigerian web startups and blogs on the Alexa Top 100 most visited sites in Nigeria. Alexa is the leading Web Ranking & Information Company. My research found six Nigerian startups (forums and blogs) amongst the top 100 most visited sites in Nigeria. (Note: This research did not include Nigerian online news sites, banks, etc that make the top 100 most visited sites in Nigeria)

Here are the web startups and their rankings:

  1. Nairaland - A discussion forum for Nigerians, which attempts to cover every topic from romance to entertainment, technology and business. (Ranked 13 out of 100)
  2. NaijaHotJobs - A Nigerian community where you can find jobs, discuss employment trends and general topics making a buzz around Nigeria. (Ranked 36 out of 100)
  3. NewNigerians - A forum for meeting Nigerian Internet Veterans and discussing topics from business to politics; from sports to relationships (Ranked 70 out of 100)
  4. CareersNigeria - A weblog that publishes latest jobs, employment gist and careers opportunities in Nigeria for graduates and top candidates. (Ranked 78 out of 100)
  5. AllJobsNigeria - A forum that publishes latest jobs, employment gist and careers opportunities in Nigeria. (Ranked 80 out of 100)
  6. NaijaEcash - A personal blog of a Nigerian Entrepreneur that shares secrets about earning income online legitimately. (Ranked 99 out of 100)

Interestingly, most of these sites claim to be the Number 1 site/forum for Nigerians, Nigerian jobs, and Nigerian career community. That shows that each site understands that there is competition and thus, they must claim to be No. 1 in order to stay competitive.

However, Nairaland is the most popular Nigerian forum that brings Nigerians together to discuss issues, topics, etc. Careers Nigeria has proved its strengths (just a year old), in the business of providing job announcements, information, etc for Nigerians. Their forum has also done remarkably well in just about a few months.

Naijaecash, on the other hand, is the fastest growing web entrepreneurship blog in Nigeria. The blog which just started in March 2008 now has a traffic rank of about 53, 000, which I personally find amazing. (I’ve thought about asking the author in an interview how he accomplished this in less than 3 months). In a recent post, he points to Alexa as one of his traffic source.

So which of these Nigerian sites do you use?

If you like this blog, you can subscribe to the feeds. You can also save this article to digg, delicious, stumbleupon or sturvs.

Nairaland is still the “Father” of all the startups. Two things are most crucial in such metrics or thier estimate. Income and Page Impressions. Nairaland by far surpassb others in this respect. Careers Nigeria is not based in Nigeria but a product of what I call SEO fireworks, in fact it has stalled and got stuck for the last three months if you check her Alexa traffic trend.

Nijaecash keep an eye on that. naijahotjobs is stable in growth and has carved out a niche in the market. Because it is original, it would go far, it is not a fluke. My problem with NewNigerians is that it looks more like a nairaland carbon-copy. Like I said somewhere else on my blog, the web has a way of punishing duplicate ideas.

    Keep up your good works

NaijaEcash is an incredible site that i visit frequently. The administrator, Naija Entrepreneur or Bro Tee, is kind, helpful and personable. His site is quite frankly an inspiration for other Nigerian bloggers who are trying to compete with probloggers from around the world and create sites that are user friendly and informative. Nairaland is another site that has continuously provided relevant information.

I am unfamiliar with the other sites mentioned, but now that I know of them, I am sure to check them out and support them if I can.

    NIGERIAN CURIOSITY
IT WAS SO MUCH EASIER WHEN I ONLY HAD ONE

Nairaland is the leader when it comes to the most browsed.
But i have my eyes on one other forum published two weeks ago.
Http://www.afrowall.com. Owned by a good friend with a good sense of humor.
Simple machine product too but with nice colour layout and good theme.
Generated about 50 members in less than a day of its publishing..
Although discusses issues like nairaland but with New features.
I believe it will grow fast.

I think we need to redefine the word “startup”. A website that runs on open source software with no customization or improvement (my point here being no creativity involved) and gathers a lot of traffic, is NOT a startup. By my opnion, nairaland is not a startup, but more of a fortunate online community.

I honestly do not understand the criteria for the selection here. Moreover, web startups is an ambigious term and its usage here is conflicting, i do not think forums and blog qualifies as start ups. They are just forums and blogs!

Most of the sites listed are operating in different speciality areas; thus it may be tantamount to comparing yam and cassava (botanist view). I think, web start up here goes beyond having a forum, blog or a job site.

As much as i agree with you on the marks made thus far, they are still more to be done.
Please bring up for discussion, exposition and review real internet startups from Nigeria. I am dying to be part of one.

Everyone - I appreciate all your comments.

Mike - Thank you for your comment. I think a startup is more of an idea that grows and develops overtime into a business. If you agree that Nairaland is an online community, but not a STARTUP, that means that global online communities such as TakingITGlobal are not startups. Do you agree?

Oci - I appreciate your criticism! I noted that Alexa’s rankings where used as criteria. Again, my definition of (and the purpose of this blog) web startups in Nigeria, is to write about any web product or service (web 2.0 sites, online forums/communities, blogs, etc) that are making a buzz around the web.

    That’s the idea behind StartupsNigeria.

I though nairaland should rank no. 1 among others. To me nairaland is the father of all
