Nigeria’s Social Networking Giants - Legwork.com.ng Versus OnlineNigeria.com

Social Networking sites in Nigeria have drawn a lot of attention away from global social networking giants Myspace (Ranked 6) and Facebook (Ranked 8). Sites like Legwork and Online Nigeria are currently the leading social networking hub of Nigerians home and abroad.

Both sites have similar features such as profiles, videos, blogs, forums, photos, news, groups, chat, etc, though the two sites have their differences too. According to a recent Alexa analysis, the two sites don’t share the same demographics. Legwork has more traffic from Nigeria 96.2% while OnlineNigeria has 29.0%. Does this mean that Legwork is the larger social network as it draws more traffic from Nigeria?

But wait…a look at where people visit on both sites shows that legwork.com.ng has 21%, while onlinenigeria.com has 25%. Also, visitors from the US - 30%, UK - 12.4%, Canada and Netherlands are giving OnlineNigeria a more global advantage over Legwork, which only gets visitors from the UK - 2.3%. See more traffic details on Legwork and OnlineNigeria.

The graph below shows the percentage daily reach for Legwork (Ranked 30, 940) and OnlineNigeria (Ranked 30, 561), according to Alexa.

Here you’ll find that both sites have been struggling for dominance, but OnlineNigeria has a slight edge above Legwork and in terms of ranking, OnlineNigeria also has a slight edge with 30, 561 compared to Legwork’s 30, 940.

The question is: Will both sites continue struggling for dominance or will we see a clear leader in the future?

I feel Legwork is doing a very good job. On the other hand, the amount of advertising on OnlineNigeria is ridiculous. I feel the website will do much better without all those popups. Popups are not even in fashion anymore, especially not on Web 2.0 social networking websites. Moderate placement of banners will do.

I would also consider OnlineNigeria as more of a news website than anything else.

    I hate legwork.com.ng

What sensible meaning does legwork portray? The reason they have a lot of traffic from Nigeria is that they allow you to send invite sms to your friends in Nigeria.

Legwork spams your email address (thank God it lands in the junk folder anyway) with blog updates… blog updates you never asked for during signup.

the whole interface is messy. Reminds me of the way websites were 6 years ago. Much like copying myspace at a time when people are moving away from myspace.

Now, to online Nigeria: They are spreading their net too much. They have refused to be good in one thing just because they have an ‘advantageous’ domain name.

the only ones who make me proud as a Nigerian online are people like Temi up above with his sturvs.com

Temi & 9ice - I agree with your views about both sites. Perhaps this blog should be critically analysing Nigerian sites rather than simply profiling them…
