A Look at eNowNow.com’s Technology Predictions for 2009

Today, I stumbled into an interesting article at eNowNow.com that reviews technology predictions for 2009 and thought it’d be nice to mention it here.

eNowNow is a web information portal that provides news around technology, business, politics, entertainment, sports, stock market, etc. The site also has a growing community with tools that engage its users everyday.

Below is eNowNow.com’s technology predictions for 2009:

1. PS3 pricing will be reduced
I don’t think there’s any doubt that PlayStation 3 pricing will be reduced this year. As the costs of building the console continue to fall and Sony’s competitors continue to enjoy strong sales thanks to a lower price, the pressure Sony will feel will be too much and it’ll be forced to bring the price of its PS3 down to compete more effectively against the Xbox 360 and the Wii.

2. Windows 7 will be released
Vista has been a PR nightmare for Microsoft, vendors are still upset with the product, and businesses are loath to deploy the OS for fear of incompatibility, security, and stability issues. Realizing that, Microsoft will ramp up the rhetoric in 2009 and start talking more and more about Windows 7.

Editor’s note: The new operating system (Windows 7) is scheduled for release in 2010. However, a widely released public trial, or beta, version is expected to be available in early 2009, according to Microsoft.

3. SmartPhones for everyone
Well, these days everyone wants a smarter phone…for browsing, emails, fun games etc. and the phone makers cant seem to go a month without releasing a new model…so my guess is, the prices on some of the phones you see today that make you say WOW! will be considerately reduced….so get ready to see your okada driver using a BlackBerry!

4. Phone Tarrifs will change
Etisalat, MTN, Zain, GLO, VisaFone, Multilinks, Starcomms (to mention a few) are all fighting for our pockets! they have tried everything…we think they will get more aggressive this year by reducing tariffs to woo more consumers into their network.

Well, my thoughts are that the prices of most technology/mobile products such as Play Station 3, Blackberry (or even iPhone) will reduce, due to the global economic downturns. Thus, this could mean that almost everyone in Nigeria can afford a smart phone and this trend will increase mobile web penetration in Nigeria.

Again, the competition in the mobile industry amongst the telecoms operators will drive phone tarriffs to the lowest record ever by the end of 2009.

What are your thoughts about this?

    Yea! these are good predictions.

Nigeria as always there is always one-thing or the other challenge. Looking at the exchange rate, it may not be as fast as predicted. If the exchange rate was stable as it were as at early November, I bet we wouldn’t feel the credit crunch much.

All the same, am always glad to see Nigeria doing great on the technology side, it’s good news for us.
