Legwork Lets You Transform Your Phone Into Social Web

It seems that the social web space in Nigeria is gradually transforming as Legwork now transforms your mobile phone into a social web. The social media startup has now rebranded as a mobile social networking startup and has integrated Twitter as a tool to building a mobile-phone community.

Legwork.com.ng is Nigeria’s premier meeting place on the Internet for information, business, career and social networking. The social networking site has recently redesigned their site and added more interesting features such as mobile blogging, mobile clubs, Twitter updates and lots more.

Like other social networking sites, Legwork allows you to find jobs, shop online, connect with others via forums, chatrooms and instant messenger. You can find events, read news, gists and play quizzes. You can also find old friends or make new ones via schools, place of worship, or workplace.

The site which claims to have membership of over 500,000 Nigerians (with over 150 000 members living in Nigeria) has features including Twitter, SMS Channels, Mobile Meetup, Mobile Clubs, 150 Blogging that allows members to network socially, research opportunities, find businesses and receive informative, interesting and entertaining content via their mobile phone.

Unique Features

  • Twitter enables members to stay connected with friends on the go by sending and receiving short alerts “Twitts”.
  • SMS Channels enables members to get entertaining and informative content such as news, sports, love poems on their mobile phone.
  • 150 blogging enables members to share their thoughts with other 24/7 while on the go.
  • Meet-up events allows members to meet new friends face-to-face by organizing or subscribing to events broadcasted via mobile.
  • Mobile clubs enables members of similar interest to stay in touch and communicate instantly using mobile technologies.

My Take

Legwork has taken me by surprise with these new and interesting features. This shows that the social networking scene in Nigeria has yet more and more places to explore. With this rebrand, my guess is that Legwork will be able to compete with social networking rival, Naijapals.

Both sites are perhaps the most visited and popular social networking sites in Nigeria, so they could be seen as the Facebook and Myspace of Nigeria. While Naijapals is probably the leading social networking site (in terms of traffic), Legwork claims to be the leading social networking site (in terms of membership).

But my question is: Do these social networking sites really make money?

Well eventually they do. Facebook is now profitable (at least at EBITDA level). Check AVC for more details. It seems advertising is the main driver…
