Sturvs Launches Sturvs Mobile…and Sturvs Records too?

Sturvs, Nigeria’s Digg-like site has just launched their mobile site, which I feel it’s been a long time coming. With this launch, you can view Sturvs on your mobile phones by simply visiting m.sturvs.com from your blackberry or other mobile devices.

Launched on May 13, 2007, the social bookmarking & video-sharing site has become one of the fastest-growing Web 2.0 websites from Nigeria. We gave a report when they turned one. Sturvs launched its Facebook Application in October 2007 and started displaying Hot Sturvs, Latest Sturvs & Sturvs TV.

Sturvs launched its own Search, but the feature has since been hibernating, and we’re still wondering if it’ll ever relaunch. Could that be the death of a great search tool?

Despite the failure of Sturvs search, the site was given a comparative analysis with Muti.co.za, South Africa’s social bookmarking site. Sturvs redesigned for 2009 and later launched Sturvs Ads, an advertising platform which lets you gain exposure to over 3000 Nigerians who visit the website daily. I’m not sure if this ad platform still works.

We recently gathered that Sturvs is floating its own record label - Sturvs Records. Just this week, Sturvs sent a ‘donotreply’ email saying:

Ok so if you haven’t heard, we now have a record label, Sturvs Records. And our sole
artist Phizzle aka Oloro Mr Rapper has his first official single Jaiye Jaiye out
now.

Again, the music artist Phizzle talked about Sturvs Records in a recent interview with Zain Central Station. Here are excerpts from the interview:

itsphizzle: Started put to my music up on Sturvs.com…which is a site owned by a fellow Babcock boy, Temi Kolawole

Kunle: Yeah i know about that

itsphizzle: Right now me and temi are developing our own record label Sturvs Records

Obviously, Sturvs has been featuring lots of Nigerian music stars lately like Phizzle, Dare Art Alade, D’banj, Tuface Idibia, Olu Maintain amongst others. In fact, I’ve found myself visiting Sturvs more often these days to get the latest videos, songs and gists from the Nigerian music industry. This makes me wonder if Sturvs is gradually becoming Youtube? Or Myspace?

Just a few weeks ago, I had a one-hour or so face-to-face chat with Temi Kolawole, founder of Sturvs.com, and he said to me: “You might just wake up one morning and notice that Sturvs is looking totally different”. I guess I’m getting the picture now, pal.

So while we wonder what he plans to do next with Sturvs (site now has a different look), we’ll be keeping an eye on the site as it seems that more surprises are in the offing.

Will Sturvs still remain the Digg-like site we use to know? I doubt this very much.
