AfricanSignals.com - Africa’s Mobile and Internet Data Wiki

Erik Hersman of White African has just put together a site, African Signals dedicated to finding out and showing local rates for mobile phone and internet connections around Africa.

The site is a wiki page that lists 54 African countries and allows people to add information on the availability, costs and service levels of mobile phone and internet service providers (ISPs) of their various countries.

At the moment, there are a few information from countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Liberia and Nigeria. I’m not sure who has added info about Nigeria, but since it is a collaborative work, I’m hoping that anyone that has reliable data on the mobile and internet scene in Nigeria should contribute to the wiki.

So your job is to go over to African Signals and enter whatever you know about the local costs, speeds and service levels for mobile phone operators and internet service providers (ISPs) in Nigeria.

It would only take about 5-10 minutes to see if you can add anything new, or if the info there is accurate. You can also tell your tech-savvy friends and share the information around. Hopefully, it could become a great resource for everyone who needs information about Nigeria’s mobile and internet data statistics.

Legwork Lets You Transform Your Phone Into Social Web

It seems that the social web space in Nigeria is gradually transforming as Legwork now transforms your mobile phone into a social web. The social media startup has now rebranded as a mobile social networking startup and has integrated Twitter as a tool to building a mobile-phone community.

Legwork.com.ng is Nigeria’s premier meeting place on the Internet for information, business, career and social networking. The social networking site has recently redesigned their site and added more interesting features such as mobile blogging, mobile clubs, Twitter updates and lots more.

Like other social networking sites, Legwork allows you to find jobs, shop online, connect with others via forums, chatrooms and instant messenger. You can find events, read news, gists and play quizzes. You can also find old friends or make new ones via schools, place of worship, or workplace.

Press Release: StartupsNigeria.com Closes Site Indefinitely

Press Release

Lagos, Nigeria - April 1, 2009 - This is to inform our readers that we are closing down this site indefinitely. StartupsNigeria.com has been in existence since April 25, 2008 and has grown to become one of the most read technology blogs in Africa, but sadly has recieved a lot of negative criticism from the Nigerian web space.

Since we have endeavoured to showcase several startups from Nigeria and believe that we have given a relatively moderate review and analysis of the Nigerian web space and startup scene, we feel that we’ve made our mark in today’s web space.

We appreciate your readership and criticisms within the last one year and hope that the web industry in Nigeria will continue to grow and become very competitive in the global web space.

Note: All enquiries should be sent to startupsnigeria (at) gmail.com

419 Radio - Social Networking Site for Scammers?

Whether you have been scammed before or not, I’m very sure that the very knowledge of an internet radio with the name 419 is probably not the best place to be. Perhaps for some who are curious.

419 Radio is an online Nigerian internet radio service that offers free music in order to promote artists and producers in Nigeria’s emerging entertainment industry. The internet radio can be used to promote movies, songs, artists, events and other features in the entertainment industry.

What Are The Features?

419 Radio’s player (on beta) continues to shuffle Nigerian songs of various genres non-stop. The whole idea is to have a true radio that plays random high quality Nigerian songs from urban to oldies. The player limits the number of times you can skip songs before it forces you to listen to a full song.

The site currently streams approximately 500 Nigerian songs and the number keeps increasing everyday. The site has 6 votes on Sturvs (as at the time of writing this post).

SynthaSite is Now Yola. And Nigeria Already Has Yola.

yola by you.

Silicon-Valley based free website building startup, SynthaSite has just announced that they are changing their name to Yola. It just so happens that Yola is the capital city of Adamawa State in Northern Nigeria.

According to SynthaSite CEO, Vinny Lingham,

Yola is derived from the Hindi word “jhola,” which means hatch – and hatching big ideas is exactly what you do at Yola.

It’s quite interesting to see startups adopt traditional names that reflect the goal or concept of their companies. In Nigeria, there are quite a few startups that have adopted traditional names from the yoruba, igbo and hausa languages.

However, my concern is to see more interesting startup ideas, concepts, strategy, design, features, solutions etc from the Nigerian startup scene than just names.
