Announcing Twestival 2009 in Lagos, Nigeria

Hey, I’m excited about the opportunity to be part of Twestival 2009. Last year in September, a group of Twitterers based in London UK decided to organise an event where the local Twitter community could socialize offline; meet the faces behind the avatars, enjoy some entertainment, have a few drinks and tie this in with a food drive and fundraising effort for a local homeless charity.

Today, over 175 cities around the world will be hosting Twestivals which will bring together Twitter communities for an evening of fun and to raise money and awareness for charity: water.

So next Thursday, February 12 at a pleasant venue somewhere in Lagos, twitter users living in Lagos will be having an informal mash-up between social media and charity. If you are interested, kindly follow the events updates at Lagos Twestival or @LagosTwestival

This event is being organised by Qubestreet and Startups Nigeria and would be hosted under the Nigeria 2.0 Events platform. You can contact @qubestreet if you can assist in any way with publicity, donations or sponsorships.

Can Facebook Developers Garage Be Built in Nigeria?

Last week, I discussed with some software and web developers from the University of Lagos, Nigeria who indicated their strong interests in a hands-on workshop that would allow Nigerian developers to learn how to use the Facebook Platform and APIs to develop widgets and applications for businesses.

After the success of the Facebook Developers Garage in Kenya, Ghana and Uganda, I thought it’d be great to host one of such events in Lagos, Nigeria. The event will provide a forum for students and professional software developers in Nigeria to learn about the Facebook Platform and APIs, participate in application demonstrations, seek technical support from experts, share ideas and build collaborations.

Interestingly, Facebook has attracted a lot of Nigerians (over 200,000 active users), but few software developers and web entrepreneurs have actually used the Facebook Platform to develop applications. An example of such is Sturvs Facebook Application. This means that a great number of Nigerian web developers out there are yet to use their skills to build applications on the Facebook Platform.

So if you’re interested in a Facebook Developers Garage in Nigeria, you can join the Facebook group and participate in the discussions. You can also leave your thoughts, opinion, ideas and suggestions in the comments section below.

NEXT - Nigeria’s Newest Online Newspaper Launched

Timbuktu Media has successfully launched its first print edition of the newest Nigerian newspaper called NEXT, published on January 4 2009, which follows the launch of its online edition in December.

The newspaper’s publisher Dele Olojede, a Nigerian Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and former foreign editor for Newsday,  described its aim as “to provide news and informed opinion fairly and accurately to the Nigerian public in any land.” Olojede was enthusiastic about its online reach also, saying that the paper would be delivered “via the Web, on your mobile devices, to your desktop, on YouTube and Facebook - anywhere we can find you.” Hmm, sounds interesting!
